Conferences & seminars
Major events organised by the National Thai Studies Centre include the annual Thailand Update Conference, a summer school and conference (as part of Asia Pacific Week at ANU) as well as a variety of other seminars and lectures as the opportunity arises.
Thailand update conference
The National Thai Studies Centre organises an annual or biennial Thailand Update conference, focusing on a different theme every year(s). This event draws prominent speakers, both Thai and other nationalities, from both academia and the government. From 2001 onwards, the papers presented at the Update have been made into books. These books are edited by Cavan Hogue, the director of the centre and are available to order. These can be found on the publications page.
If you would like to be notified when the next Thailand Update will be occurring, and receive information about the conference, please click to add your name to our National Thai Studies Centre mailing list.
In the links below you will find information about both past updates and the upcoming update, where information is available. Click on the year for a brief summary of the Thailand Update Conference for that year.
Back to topThai summer school and conference
The first Thai Summer School was held as part of the Australian National University’s Asia-Pacific week from 2-6 February 2004, and organised by the National Institute for Asia and the Pacific, in association with the National Thai Studies Centre. The theme of this multi-disciplinary conference/workshop was on “Thailand – Current Research Perspectives”.
The purpose of such programs is to promote postgraduate research on Thailand by bringing together current and intending postgraduate students and established scholars of Thailand from both Australia and overseas. Research students from Honours to PhD level, at whatever stage of their studies, are invited to attend. All will have opportunities for intensive contact with academic specialists in their field.
We also take this opportunity to advise that the regular Summer School on Thailand (which in 2006 included Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia) will not be held at the usual time in 2007. The College of Asia and the Pacific will host such a meeting for Asia and Pacific countries between January 29 - February 1, 2008.
"Buddhism and politics in Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar and Thailand."Paper presented by Professor Martin Stuart-Fox as a public lecture on the 31st of January 2006.
